Ideacasting by Jack Cheng

So “ideacasting” is just me giving it a name for myself (well, and for you). One of the cool things is you get to hit two birds with one stone – you get fresh content for the blog, and you get to purge the ideas in your head to make room for new ones. Plus, there’s always an extra bit of motivation when you know that you’re not the only one who’ll see it.

By turning ideacasting into a routine, it’ll also work your subconscious, getting you to look for ideas more often. All you bloggers out there know what I mean when I say that the phrase “this would make for a great blog entry” crosses my mind all the time.

How it works:

The great thing is that anyone with a blog can do it. There’s nothing to install, no software to learn how to use, and no microphones or recording devices to sync. All you gotta do is write your ideas down. And do it regularly. I’m going to try to post at least one concept per week.

In addition, I like Patrick Curry’s format- I think it’s a good way of breaking down the trains of thought, so I’m adopting a similar one (as you can already see).

Final thoughts:

Consider this is the first of (hopefully) many ideacasted concepts from me. I have a few I’ve accumulated from the past (they’re briefly scribbled down in a journal somewhere), so already, there’s no shortage of things to write about. Consider this a challenge to you too. Got a blog? Start an ideacast. Some of the ideas that come out of this could range from the half-baked to the near-impossible. But hey, who cares? That’s what ideas are.

So, here’s my very first idea.

Drumroll, please!

A reality show based on advertising folks.  Think about it.  I’m assuming the majority of people that come across this site are involved with communications in some way.  How many times have you watched “The Apprentice” and thought to yourself, “I can do the same shit they are doing and 100 times better!”  Yeah, well so does everyone at my school…which leads me to the extension of this idea.

A reality show on the VCU Adcenter.  For those of you that did not get to experience hell on earth for two years (just kidding Boyko), the Adcenter is like The Apprentice, week in and week out for 60 weeks.  Imagine getting assignments EVERYDAY and trying to solve them with new solutions all the time.

What makes this different from The Apprentice?  For some reason, I feel like the whole show has nothing to do with business and more on marketing. Most of the challenges include marketing a new product or something along those lines. And most of the time, the solutions the contestants come up with are not of the greatest caliber.

The greatest part of the show is the poor group dynamics during the whole process. Person A is slacking and person B has formed an alliance with person C and so on and so on. I can’t imagine that the advertising industry is any better but it’s the collaboration, the late night coffee runs and extremely stressful moments that make it exciting.

And I think that creative people think differently than analytical people.

Now would be the perfect time to do it.  The VCU Adcenter just got worldwide international press about the student that tried to kill Oscar on myspace.  And it was a joke for a class assignment.

VCU is moving into a new multi-million dollar facility in Richmond.

And they are the “Harvard of Advertising schools” which doesn’t mean much but still.  I bet a bunch of 21 year old kids would outsmart any of the people on the show.

And of course, the last episode would to do a 30 second spot that would air on the Super Bowl.  This is just for mainstream purposes.

What do you think?  OK, one idea out, next idea in!
